Coachella is probably the most famous festival in the world. Everyone knows about Coachella Music Festival.
However, most blogs, magazines, and newspapers seem to only cover the celebrity fashion of Coachella.
I was talking to my flatmate and she was under the impression that Coachella was only for celebrities to attend. I don’t blame her for thinking that way because that is all we see.
Who Zac Efron was seen kissing. What Emma Roberts was wearing. Whether Fergie was seen with her wedding ring on – WHO CARES?
While i do enjoy festival fashion, that shouldn’t be ALL that’s reported on. It IS a music festival so it should be about the music.
2012’s Line Up. image from latimesblogs.latimes.com
This year’s Coachella took place on two separate weekends with identical line ups. I watched the live streaming on Youtube and narrowed down my favourite acts.
Here’s my Top 10 Coachella performances.
1. Swedish House Mafia
Accompanied by a stunning display of laser lights with the crowd absolutely loving every sweaty,glow-stick waving 90 minute set. Swedish House Mafia decided that while laser lights would get the crowd going, nothing beats confetti being blown to the crowd while the stage is being dominated by pyrotechnics. Stunning performance!
Among all the awesome Radiohead tunes that were played at Coachella, this performance was probably my favourite. Lead singer Thom Yorke just makes everything looks so effortlessly beautiful. The live performances of material from the ‘King of Limbs’ album was a lot better than the actual album itself. Radiohead delivered a strong set as usual, drawing heavily from their ‘King of Limbs’ and ‘In Rainbows’ album.
3. Bon Iver
Justin Vernon and his band set a very romantic environment, with subtle colourful lights flashing throughout the performance. For ‘Skinny Love’, Vernon dimmed it down so you could concentrate on the music and every note that was sung. ‘Skinny Love’ turned into the biggest anthem-like singalong.
17 year old French native, Hugo Pierre Leclercq, otherwise known as ‘Madeon‘ has risen to fame ever since he mixed Pendulum’s ‘The Island’ in 2010. He dominated the stage at Coachella, despite being of such a young age, he definitely knew how to handle the Coachella crowd.
First time Coachella players, The Vaccines definitely represented England and absolutely smashed the festival. They were energetic and even got the crowd chanting to their song,’Wrecking Bar’ at one point. While they did play a smaller stage, if they make it back for Coachella next year.. they definitely deserve to play the bigger stages at Coachella.
6. The Hives
Known for the energy-fuelled live shows, Swedish band The Hives did exactly what was expected of them. Lead singer Pelle Almqvist kept shouting to the crowd ” do you love me people?! you can do better. DO YOU LOVE ME?” Famous for stage dramatics, Almqvist entertained the crowd thoroughly and even asked them to sit down, creating an ocean of seated bodies only to jump up when he counted to three.
7. Gary Clark Jr
Newcomer Gary Clark Jr melted the crowd with his amazing guitar licks and smooth sounding blues set. He played a 55 minute fiery set that seemed to have left me, who’s watching his set on Youtube absolutely amazed and speechless.. Imagine how the crowd must have felt!
8. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Former Oasis member, Noel Gallagher opened his set with The Stone Roses’ ‘Fools Gold’. The highlight of the entire set was definitely when he played Oasis classic, ‘Dont Look Back in Anger’ which was joined by a massive crowd sing a long. His entire set just makes you you almost want to cry thinking that Oasis is not around anymore.
9. Arctic Monkeys
Kicking off their set with ‘Brianstorm’, Sheffield rockers played their hearts out and made it through the heat in Indio,California. They played crowd favourites, “I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor, ‘A View from the Afternoon‘ and ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ before ending with their new single,’ R U Mine’
10. Dr.Dre,Snoop Dogg & Tupac (wait, what?)
Yes, I said Tupac. Now, I’m sure you’ve heard about the performance. Dr. Dre and Snoop brought Tupac back to life via holographic imaging. The use of the hologram has sparked many rumours all over the internet about a hologram-only tour featuring musicians that have already deceased. While i’m not a huge fan of Dr.Dre or Snoop, I did think this performance was amazing.
