Of Monsters and Men,’My Head is an Animal’
Icelandic indie folk rockers are taking the world by storm. After winning the Músíktilraunir an annual battle of the bands in Iceland, the band released their debut album ‘My Head is an Animal’ worldwide in April this year.
Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir and Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson vocals and the arrangement of the music, the album showcases how talented the band are.
‘Little Talks’ is a perfect example of how the entire album sounds – catchy and upbeat.
The harmonies and alternating vocals of Hilmarsdóttir and Þórhallsson are showcased in album openers,’Mountain of Sound’ and ‘Dirty Paws’. However, on the track ‘ Love Love Love’, Hilmarsdóttir takes the spotlight singing about a one sided relationship.
Þórhallsson also takes charge on ‘ Your Bones as it croons to subtle excellence with his vocals on the bold chorus.
The band invites you into their own lyrical fantasyland. They sing about childlike metaphors which explores ghosts, ships, and death. These nonsensical lyrics are layered with their enthusiastic and upbeat melodies that will make you hit the repeat button.
Overall, it’s a solid album. But if you’re expecting a new unique sounding band, you’d be disappointed. But they are definitely worth a listen.
