If you haven’t heard of Andrew WK, you’ve clearly been living under a rock. The 32-year old white denim obsessed hedonist who famously stated that he would die if he stopped partying, returned to Manchester Academy last Friday 13th April, in celebration of the ten-year anniversary of his debut I Get Wet album.
I Get Wet was played in its entirety as the venue filled with die-hard fans that mirrored WK’s iconic look- white jeans and blood stained white t-shirts partied hard. The Manchester crowd went manic as soon as WK jumped on stage and screamed, “It’s time to party!”.He didn’t have to say more.
The sold out gig was 90 minutes of hardcore partying at break neck speed. The set list included,” Party Till You Puke”, ”Ready to Die”,”Headbang”,“It’s Time To Party” and ”Fun Night’.
With the stamina of an Energizer bunny, WK returns for an encore of “We Want Fun”. He then invited the crowd on stage. As you’d imagine, the amount of people pushing and crowd surfing to the front just to get on the same stage as Andrew WK was unbelievable.
While many people tend to associate Andrew WK with vomit, decadence, drinking and partying without a cause, he has managed to attract fans with his positive mental attitude, giving motivational lectures to Ivy League universities such as Yale and Harvard. Talking to the person standing next to me in the crowd, we both came to an agreement that we need more people like Andrew WK – who’s only objective in life is to have a good time and party hard despite going through tough times.
Unfortunately for us, the Andrew WK party had to come to an end. Before leaving the stage, WK points to each section of the crowd and says, “ You will remember tonight”. And I certainly will.
If you missed seeing Andrew W.K live in Manchester, here’s I Get Wet.
