The upcoming Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth has been cancelled. According to a statement on the festival’s website, the organisers fought very hard to keep the festival going but it was “ a very challenging year “ and “was more difficult than we anticipated”.
It would have been a very special edition of Sonisphere because it would’ve marked the reappearance of Queen with Adam Lambert on the same stage they performed with Freddie Mercury, twenty-six years ago.
Glassjaw were also scheduled to perform their hit 2002 album ‘Worship & Tribute’ in its entirety during their set. The event would have also featured performances by Kiss, Faith No More, Marilyn Manson,Mastodon and The Blackout.
However, fans don’t have much to worry about. Queen announced on the bands’ website, that despite the cancellation of Sonisphere, the band will still perform in the UK. The pairing of Adam Lambert and Queen will take place at London’s HMV Hammersmith Apollo on July 11 and 12. Ticket purchasing priority will go to Sonisphere ticket holders.
Marilyn Manson who will be supported by Lacuna Coil, has also confirmed a solitary show at London’s Brixton Academy on 5 July
For the rest of the ticket holders, the organisers have assured that full refunds will be given from points of purchase in the coming weeks. The cancellation of this years’ Sonisphere has left fans questioning the return of the festival in 2012. The organisers have neither confirmed or denied the possibility of Sonisphere returning in 2013.
Here are a few comments fans have posted on Sonisphere’s facebook page.
